Special Languages

TASK 1:

Do a quickwrite as a comment to this blog about the PROMPT:Is it possible to live without numbers? Is it possible to live without words for or sense of time? Is is possible to live without words for colors? Why, or why not? If yes, what would it be like?

TASK 2:

Read the following text. What are the special features of this language? Make a bullet-pointed list with examples in a Word document.

TASK 3:

Do a quickwrite about this philosophical question:

According to the theory of linguist Benjamin Whorf, who died in 1941, "people are only capable of constructing thoughts for which they possess actual words." Do you think this is true? In your opinion, do people first have a concept, and then invent words for it, or do they first need words to create a concept around them?

EMAIL me prompt 2 and 3.

I'm not sure if it would be possible to live without numbers or words for colors and things like that, but I would imagine it really wouldn't be possible. Almost everything that exists needs a word. It is definitely easier to have words assigned because without them life would be much more difficult, especially when it would come to paying for something or working on taxes and things like that.

I think it could be possible, but I feel really bad for the speakers. I love being able to describe colors, amounts, etc. I feel that it would be horrible to never be able to tell time or when something happened. You would loose words that are associated with numbers and colors as well because they would not be needed. I think it would be extremely hard to not have other words that imply the meaning of numbers and colors.

I think it would be possible to live with out the "structure of time" that we have currently. --- but others have obviously thought the same because there have been many different calendar/time systems in different cultures... however I think that it would not be possible to live in a group/tribe etc. without some sort of communication system-- If not words then sign language or something of that nature... colors and numbers are also important so they would be essential in communication.

Living completely without numbers, colors and things if that sort is so impossible and actually is pointless. Colors are something that I actually love so I would really hate it..and numbers is how I count my money do it'll be so hard not to.

It is not possible to live without numbers. almost everything in world is involving numbers.

I think it is defintely possible to live without "numbers" as we know them. Living without colors would be just as easy. It is harder for us to grasp the concept of living without things we've always known, but there was a time in the ancient past when the human race did not have a number system. Also, we had to invent ways to describe what we saw, so at one point we did not know colors either. So it is defintely possible to live without colors or numbers because it has been done before, but it is hard for us in the modern age to imagine our lives without them.

I do not think that it would be possible to live without numbers or words for time. There is so much that we do with numbers and time that we could not go from day to day. Think about it, you would go shopping and not have numbers to tell how much you owe or how much something is. It is just crazy to think about a world without numbers or colors or time.

It might be possible to live without these words..but it wouldn't be a very easy life. How would we describe what time we are to be somewhere, or how many things we need to buy at the store? How would you describe how someone looks without describing the color of their hair? A whole new system of language would have to be used...it would be very difficult.

I don't believe it would be possible to live without numbers. It is immensely important to be able to quantify things. For example, how would we know how fast we can drive? The medical field would suffer tremendously. How would we know our blood pressure? Numbers are central to our lives, and we could not live without them. We could probably live without words for colors, but that would be pretty boring. As for time, our actions are essentially linear in nature. It is necessary to know what happens first, then what happens subsequently. Time and numbers are too essential to our lives to live without.

It might be possible, but I don't think I am capable of imagining such a world. Numbers, time, and color are all things I take for granted and the possibility of not being able to use them would no doubt leave me speechless and confused. I'm not sure I can even begin to comprehend what our world would be like without these things.

I do not think that it is possible to live without numbers or words for a sense of time or colors. It wouldn't be possible because there would be no way to identify things are time. If someone were to try to live without them then they would confuse the people they were speaking to, especially about when something happened.

It is entirely possible to live without any of these contrivances. Life would be different, but none of them are required for actual life. Some I could do without more easily than others, but words and mental concepts I usually regard as a good thing.

I honestly don't think it would be possible to live without a sense of time or words for colors. It makes me really uncomfortable to think about. Without being able to describe colors, our lives would be SO boring!! I'm glad we have words that help us describe flowers, paintings, and clothing! Man, I'd be so bored without these words!

It is possible to live without color words. colors are very abstract and there are many other ways to describe things. Numbers and time are different. it is impossible to discuss many things without time or number references. It is conceivable that there could be a language without time and numbers but it would produce a culture so unlike ours that it would be almost unrecognizable.

I think that it would impossible for a language system to not create words for numbers, time, colors, etc. because these constructs are basic. One of the first things children learn is how to count and which color is what. Any developed language would most certainly include these concepts because it would be absolute chaos without time!

I really don't think it would be possible to live without words for colors, or numbers. We use numbers each and every day, on many various occasions. They are very important. As far as colors, I couldn't imagine not being able to say 'blue' or 'red', it would be so odd. They are all things that we need.

I don't think that it would be possible to live without words for numbers, words for time, or words for color. I think this because these things exist. Languages develop and form words for these things naturally because people need to describe things; that's why we have language. You can't just ignore things that exist.

It is absolutely impossible to live in a world without numbers. Buildings and bridges would be constructed with approximations instead of precise measurements. Money would have no meaning thus, the idea of school and work would seem futile. Furthermore, everything that exist needs a word, because this is what distinguished that object from others. It is possible to live without colors however.

I'm sure it could be possible to live without numbers or words for numbers, but it would be very difficult. I think it is necessary to have words that stand for numbers, time, and even colors. Things would get very confusing in our country if we didn't have these words. No one would be able to tell the time, count money, shop, etc. Anything dealing with numbers, like money and time, is essential to our everyday lives. If we get rid of these words then it will be very difficult to communicate with the outside world. I would be able to go to the store and buy groceries. There are too many things in our world that deals with these words and we couldn't survive without them.

A world without numbers will seem very primitive with no organization for international currency. The novel 'The Giver' is a great example of a world without colors(Everything is in black and white). The novel 'Eiestein Dreams' is an example of a world without a conception of time (Time Theories). Furthermore, I would not like to live in these worlds.
