Mission of Writing Centers Blog Summary

The article decsribes the three types of customers they see: first time patrons, return students, and referred students. It also explains how a tutors job is to use minimalist tutoring, and should avoid becoming an editor for the students. They stress the need to ask the students questions about their papers such as: "What concerns do you have?" The job of a tutor is to educate the student on proper writing techniques and help them become better writers. As a tutor, you might edit a first time student's paper, but only if you inform them to make an appointment in advance next time and come prepared with specific questions and concerns. A returning student should come prepared and be ready to answer questions about his paper as well as learn how to improve. Tutors may also hand out or refer writing manuals and guides to the students. A referred student is someone who has been refered to the writing center by a faculty member. These students will most likely need some serious work on mechanics(grammar) or even proper structure for papers and how to formulate a well developed thesis. The article also discusses the use of technology in the internet age. Tutors must realize and educate themselves on various ways of cummincating via technology. Word processing programs, e-mail, and blogs are examples of the various ways in which the world communicates or uses technology in writing today.

I have been to the writing center several times and think that it is very helpful when a student is struggling with an assignment. They do a good job at not just giving out answers, but making the student think for themselves and come to solutions with guidance from the tutor.

I think it is good that the students are guided during the assignment process, and not just to have someone do it for them.

I have to say that I greatly respect those who are working in the writing center. I have been there once and they did a great job! They didn't give me all the answers, but they guided me in the right direction!

The writing center would be a great place to go to get guidance on writing skills. I think that it is a great idea to have such a place on campus. I think that it is extremely important to have a place where people can go to have their papers proofread and to be given suggestions and ideas.

What should be done if a student knows that he has grammar problems and the tutor only says you should work on grammar? The student has therefore, not been helped nor guided. The student is left where he started, with a lot of great ideas smothered in error. I think that with grammar students should just be strictly told what to do and why. And then when the mistake arises again, the tutor should ask the student how to correct it.

I think it is good that the tutors use minimalist tutoring. I believe that the students should help teach themsevles and not rely solely on someone else. The need to learn from their mistakes and fix them as they are writting. I think the writing center is a very helpful institution and I hope every student uses their facilities. The people are there to help you.

I agree with the minimalist tutoring! Like Regina said students do not need someone else to do their work. I have never been to the writing center, but it's nice to know they are there if I need some help.

It would be pointless for a tutor to completely show the student how to write a paper. This only makes the student dependent on the tutor and the writing center. The goal of being a tutor is to get the student to have enough ability to eventually not go to the writing center anymore.

i think that having a place such as the writing center or woody hall for extra help and guide will give students more confident in doing their work. Or having a hard assignment that maybe unclear it gives them a source so that they are capable of to do it and be successful at it.

I have never been to the writing center. But this is because I have friends that read my papers. They do all of the things that the writing center does.

I have been to the writing center and they don't give you the answers, which is great. I think it allows you to fix you own mistakes as well as help you better your writing techniques.

I think the tutors at the writing center do an excellent job. They are attentive to one's needs and answer questions helpfully. Overall they are awesome tutors and I will continue to go to writing center when necessary.

This is the only proper way to make sure the student is not just gliding through school if they truly need help.
