TASK 1: Do a quickwrite (3-5 min.) as a comment to this blog entry about the PROMPT:
"Is is possible to invent a language with a whole new grammar system, which can actually be used for communication by people all over the world?"
TASK 2:
We are going to watch the following film in-class: "The Language Challenge - - Facing up to Reality."
TASK 3:
TOPIC: translation again..... take about 10 minutes to complete this task.Work with a partner and translate the following text into English to the best of your ability:
TASK 4:
Open the following file. Read along with the text (original and English translation) while we are hearing the sound file on the smartboard computer.
PROMPT: Email me the following answers in essay format. If you don't get done in class, it will be homework for Wednesday.
1) How much would you understand if you just heard the spoken version?
2) If you understood something, what was the reason for that? If you didn't, what was the reason for that?
3) Would it take you longer or shorter to learn this language than to learn German, French, Spanish, or another languague like these? Explain.
4) Do you think it has a future? Explain.
5) Could you create something like this? If you had to, how would you proceed; whom/what would you involve, what would it be like?
LAST EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY: (Due date: Friday this week)
If you still need to make up for an unexcused missed day, or for homework/blog comments, write a 2 page essay about the history and development of this language! You can use the Internet for sources, but you have to quote accordingly in correct MLA or APA format.
OR:
Write a paper of the same length about other languages like that!

I'm sure it would be possible to invent a language with a whole new grammar system but I think it would be extremely difficult to come up with being that there are so many different languages and grammar systems in the world now.
Yes, it is certainly possible. J.R.R. Tolkein invented a language called Elvish for The Lord of the Rings. Although this language is not widely used, it certainly could be. He has invented a grammar system and an entire vocabulary. Star Trek did the same thing with Cling-On (sp?). However, newly invented languages will likely never be widely used, as globalization has resulted in fewer and fewer widely spoken languages. Because a person can survive in the world economy simply by speaking English, they are unlikely to learn a new language and hope it takes hold. Practicality is the key, not the difficulty of inventing a language.
I guess it could be possible, though it is rather far fetched. Our world has plenty of different languages with varying grammar rules, but as a result numerous groups of people cannot communicate with others.
Creating a language that the entire world would use would be almost impossible. Sure, inventing one and trying to put it into practice might work, but eventually, it would change and be different throughout the world because people have different accents and ways of saying words. So, over time, the language would change into something different. I don't think that anyone would be able to do this during this time period because so many people enjoy the diversity of the world and there would be no way of getting the new language to the entire world. There are just too many people and places that are not known. It is a nice thought, though.
I think that it is possible to invent a language. Although, when you have to invent a grammar system for the language the details to this can be tricky. I do think that both are possible. If you just think about how our language came about. Someone had to invent every language that is spoken in the world today.
with all the languages that we have in this world today, thinking about inventing a new language just gives me a headache LOL!! I just do not see how creating a new language would be beneficial to anyone. I think we need to concentrate more on the languages out there, learning them I mean, to really get ahead. Who really has the time to sit down and create a new language. Certainly not us college students!
I've never really thought of this possibility before, but it actually could be done. It would be very difficult. Not only would educators all over the world have to agree on the standard for this language and how it should be taught, but there might be great resentment in making a "universal" language; and not respecting the variety of languages present in our world.
It is of course possible to make a new grammar system. It would be very difficult to make a system that is completely unlike any other but you can definitely make a new one. there is so much room for variation that it would not be too difficult to make one.

It is possible to invent a new language--- I mean it has been done before or we would not have modern l languages... There is hieroglyphics, tribal language those are languages that had to be invented by someone... or more then one person... I think more than one person would need to help in the creation of a new language. I personally don't think it would be a good idea today I think there are enough language to to learn already without creating anew one to confuse people. I have a friend whose family created a whole language just for the, that is goofy-- I can understand her when she speaks that way but I can't speak it myself... it kind of reminds me of pig-Latin but it is way more complicated!
Well I guess it could be possible. However, it will take a lot of work. Not only will the language need to be created, but it will also need to taught to everyone in the world. It is not impossible, but it is hard to image. It takes years just to learn a second language that has been around for centuries. It will be even harder to learn a brand new one. It will be very useful I guess to have a universal language so that way people will be able to communicate better. It is hard to imagine, but not impossible. I don't think it should be done because our languages make us unique and makes the world what it is today.
It would most likely be possible to do this but would take a really long time to catch on, especially since no one will know it. It seems kind of pointless but I guess if everyone would learn it then everyone could communicate with each other on some level. I'm not sure if I think it's a good or bad thing. I guess it would be a good thing?
It seems rather unlikely that such a thing would be a good idea. I mean, why would someone want to use your made-up language when they already have one of their own? maybe so that everyone could communicate together? But then I don't see why people wouldn't just choose a language to learn that already exists. Also, it would be hard to make up a language from scratch, without influence from other languages. I guess one instance when this could work out if if you were thrown in a situation where a bunch of people who spoke different languages were made to work together for a long time. A language would emerge enabling communication, but I think that grammar would follow such an instance slowly.

I think it is quite possible to create a language that can be used by many people. This would especially be possible for people who were very close. But as for a language that everybody would use, I think it would take years, possibly generations, to get everyone in the world to speak the same language. Most likely, people would not be fluent or comfortable in the language unless they had learned it as children.
I'm sure that with time and dedication, someone could absolutely invent a new language with a grammar system. However, as far as it being able to be used by people all around the world? It would just be another language for us all to learn, just another second language. It would be silly, in my opinion for a person to think they were going to break communication barriers by inventing a NEW language. If we were all going to learn the same language, we'd all learn one that already exists - I guess.
Yes I believe that it would work. Just recently there has been a new type of language that is communicated all over the world, that is the language of the cell phone text messaging system. Many people are learning this language and it is being used everyday.

I think it could be done, but it is certainly a stretch to think it would be successful. You would first of all have the task of convincing everyone to adopt your language, would be a difficult task in itself. I think it would be tough to get people to pass the language on to their kids, since they themselves would be rather unfamiliar with it.

Is it possible to create your own grammar system which would allow everyone across the world to communicate? I would have to answer yes, although I pale at the thought of actually beginning such an endeavor. I have a few reasons for believing that the task of creating a new grammar system would be a monumental task. First of all, the need for originality creates the interesting problem of knowing all the grammar systems now present and not resembling any of them. Albeit difficult, I think that someone could create an entirely new grammar system that other people could learn and communicate to each other.
I think that inventing a new language is definately possible, however i would not see why there would be a need for it. I think with all of the languages already in use today, it would be hard to invent a language that could be both parts useful and efficient. Overall, i really don't see a need for any invention of a language, but it would be an interesting development to observe.
Yes, there is a possibility to make a new language that people will use. To make this successful, this new language would have to be used in a community that speaks no other language. Therefore, the community would be confined to communicate with in the grammatical sanctions of the language. Thus, creating a new language is a possibility.

You can invent languages, take Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, Star Wars, etc... all of these movies have spawned languages that their fans have learned and use. In fact there was a linguistic scholarship that made you write a paper in Klingon (sp) the language from Star Trek....
I believe anything is possible, some how ebonics was brought up so therefore any new language can occur in this world and also be used.
Yes. As long as the grammar rules for the language is consistently followed by everyone. It is very likely for a 'made-up' language to be used for communication by people all over the world. Invented languages are extremely hard to establish, however if there are enough followers then it is surely possible.
